French Embassy, Cultural Center to stage Vietnamese music show in Hanoi

The French Embassy and French Cultural Center will organize a Vietnamese music program in Hanoi on Saturday after it was held in France last year. The weekend program is a continuation of its artists’ tireless efforts to nurture Vietnam’s time-honored music.

The program – “Tieng Truc Tieng To” (“De bambou et de soie” which can be translated as “Bamboo and Silk) – will take place at 8:00 pm at L’Espace, at 24 Trang Tien Street, Hoan Kiem District.

The show ran twice at Paris-based Guimet Museum in November last year and was considered quite a success.

It was organized as part of the “Vietnam Year in France” meant to celebrate 40 years of diplomatic relations between the Southeast Asian country and the European nation.

The two countries set up their diplomatic relationship on April 12, 1973.

“Tieng Truc Tieng To,” which will feature noted traditional music artists, is said to offer audiences delighting experiences of a journey into the traditional Vietnamese music heritage which spans 10 centuries and covers a wide array of genres, including “ca tru” (ceremonial northern singing), “cheo” (traditional northern music and performance), “chau van” (traditional northern spiritual singing), and “hat xam” (northern street folk music). The program is one of the fruits of the relentless efforts mounted by a group of veteran artists in Hanoi.

In the past two years, they have also run a monthly program dedicated to “co nhac,” a form of nostalgic music popular in southern Vietnam.
