Police in Ho Chi Minh City have arrested a 30-year-old man for splashing acid on five young women on Sunday, spurred by jealousy. Three bystanders were also affected. The detainee is Nguyen Van Dung, who was arrested after committing the crime at noon on November 3 in front of a house at 127 Nguyen Van Cu, District 5. A few minutes earlier, five young women left the house and while they were waiting for a taxi, Dung approached them on a scooter and splashed a can of acid onto them. The victims tried to escape into a neighboring house. Dung ran after them and continued to throw acid on them while they rushed into the house, where three other people were standing outside. Those three people, a 45-year-old woman who hawked lottery tickets and two children, both 11 years old, were also burned by the acid. After committing the crime, Dung tried to escape on his scooter but he was seized by locals who handed him over to the police. All eight victims were taken to Cho Ray Hospital and some, with slight burns, were discharged later the same day. Two of the women suffer from serious burns, one of whom is H.K.H, 21, the target of Dung’s rage. Dung confessed to police that he had declared his love to H but the woman refused his love and told him she was engaged to another man. H also told police that at the time Dung splashed acid on her and her friends, she was preparing to go to Phu Quoc Island, southern Kien Giang Province with relatives for her engagement ceremony.
