After Storm Krosa dissipated, a tropical depression that slashed the Philippines in the early morning will enter the East Sea tonight, followed by tropical Storm Haiyan, which is gathering strength. Both may affect southern Vietnam in a few days, the National Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Center reported. In the aftermath of Krosa and also due to the cold front, the region from Quang Tri to Binh Dinh Provinces and the northern Central Highlands area will experience medium to heavy rains starting this afternoon. Meanwhile, the depression is about to enter the East Sea and is likely to upgrade into a storm soon and affect the south central provinces and the southern region, the center warned. At 1 am today the depression was centered at 10.2 degrees latitude north and 121.3 degrees longitude east, in the southern Philippines. Winds near the eye of the storm reached 50-61 kph, with gusts of 62-88 kph. The depression is moving between west and west-southwest at a speed of 25 kph and will turn into a storm. At 1 am Wednesday, the storm will be centered at 11.0 degrees latitude north and 114.8 degrees longitude east, in the waters north off the Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago, packing winds of up to 88 kph and gusts of 89-117 kph. In the next 24 hours, the storm will move between west and west-northwest at 25 km and will get stronger. At 1 am Thursday, November 7, the storm will be located off the coastal region between Khanh Hoa and Ba Ria-Vung Tau provinces, with winds of 75-102 kph and gusts of 103-133 kph. Due to the storm, the southeast East Sea, including the sea of Truong Sa, will experience rough seas and strong winds of up to 61 kph. In areas near the storm’s eye, the winds will be stronger, up to 88 kph, with gusts of 89-117 kph. Meanwhile, tropical storm Haiyan, roughly 900 km south-southeast of Guam, is gathering strength and moving in the same direction as the aforementioned storm. Therefore, it may affect the same regions in Vietnam, the center warned.
