Ministry says no more French-architectural buildings

The Ministry of Construction, though being busy with the disbursement of the VND30 trillion package aiming at bringing the realty market to life, did not forget to remind local authorities late last month that they should not construct buildings that imitate classic French and European architectures.

Municipal departments of constructions should keep an eye on the quality management of architectural works in their localities, said the ministry in a document dating back to May 23, 2013.

In April 2010, the government issued Decree No.38 on space, architecture, and urban landscape management.

The decree stated that construction works need to comply with the principle of proper architectural inheritance, natural conditions and features, showing respect to local customs and culture to preserve regional identity.

However, according to the ministry, many of its local arms have yet to establish local regulations on urban architectural management, leading to the fact that many construction works violated the decree, especially in preserving local architectural identities.

As a result, the ministry asked its functional units to control the quality of the construction projects, especially those funded by state budget, to preserve traditional traits and ensure each municipality has its own architectural language, in accordance with regional cultural conditions and practices.

In Hanoi, after receiving the ministry’s request, Nguyen Van Suu, deputy chairman of the city People's Committee, signed a written order telling relevant state agencies to implement all of the mentioned issues immediately.
