Vietnam holds concerts in tribute to salient composer Trinh Cong Son

Many shows to pay respects to revered composer Trinh Cong Son on his 14th death anniversary will take place in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City this week, April, and May.

One of the shows, “Ha Huyen 2,” will start at 8:00 pm on Friday at Heritage Space, located at 28 Tran Binh Street, Cau Giay District in Hanoi.

Giang Trang, a local singer, will sing several of the composer’s haunting songs, including “Goi Ten Bon Mua,” “Ru Em Tung Ngon Xuan Nong,” and “Toi Oi Dung Tuyet Vong.”

The show will be organized in France and Germany next month.

“Ha Huyen 2” is also the title of a music album which features Son’s 12 signature songs.

Another show to commemorate the salient composer’s 14th death anniversary is also set to take place at 8:00 pm on April 4 at the Hanoi Friendship Culture Center, situated at 91 Tran Hung Dao Street, Hoan Kiem District.

The event will see performances of Son’s songs by veteran and emerging singers.

The Vinh, who had his right arm amputated, will showcase his flair in playing the guitar with his left hand in his debut appearance in Hanoi.

Meanwhile, the fixture shows which are organized by Son’s family exactly on his death anniversary every year will not come until one month later.

Such tardiness is because the composer’s family needs more time to prepare for four shows this year, instead of one in Ho Chi Minh City as in previous years.

The four are scheduled for May 2 in the southern city; May 9 in the Mekong Delta province of Bac Lieu; May 16 in Hanoi; and May 23 in Hue City, the capital of Thua Thien-Hue Province in central Vietnam.

However, as usual, the Trinh Cong Son Memorial House, located at 47C Pham Ngoc Thach Street in District 3, Ho Chi Minh City will be opened to the public from 6:00 am to 4:00 pm on Son’s death anniversary, which falls on Wednesday next week.

An awards ceremony of a competition called “Trinh Music in My Heart 2015,” which was jointly organized by Son’s family and local newswire Mot The Gioi, is also poised to take place at 10:00 am at the memorial house on the same day.

Enthusiasts of Son’s music will organize a trip to pay respects to him at his grave in Go Dua Cemetery in Thu Duc District, also on Wednesday next week.

Trinh Cong Son passed away at age 60 on April 1, 2001 to the shock and profound grief of thousands of his fans, Vietnamese and foreign alike.

The BBC also covered his funeral, which was attended by some thousands of mourners.

Son has been added to the Encyclopedia Britannica, which highlights him as one of Vietnam’s most eminent composers, along with Pham Duy and Van Cao.

His music is well loved by local and international fans for its haunting melodies and profound lyrics.

Some of his iconic songs have been translated into and performed in other languages.

During his relatively brief lifetime, Son composed roughly 600 songs, mostly love songs, of which 236 are widely known. He was also an amateur poet and artist.

The composer used to live in Trinh shed in Hue City, which provided him with an endless source of artistic inspiration during his youth and is now home to his many photos and mementos.
