Concerned agencies in central Quang Binh province are investigating a case in which a wild female elephant was killed in a forest in Minh Hoa District, with its skin and tusks and most of its flesh removed. The skin, tail, two tusks, two ears, and a number of internal organs of the elephant had been removed from its body, said forest rangers, who arrived at the scene, in Khe Uoi forest, yesterday for examination. The animal was skinned and disemboweled after being killed one or two days earlier, rangers said. The intact elephant could have weighed about 4 tons and 3.2 meters long, 1.3 meters wide and 1.3 meters tall, said the authorities of Tan Hoa Commune, where the animal’s body was found on April 3. Local residents told rangers that about a month ago they found an elephant wandering in this forest, which is 10 km from the district’s forest protection station and 40 km from the border of Vietnam and Laos. The provincial Sub-department of Forest Protection is coordinating with other agencies to investigate the case. Two years ago, poachers killed a male elephant in this forest area and took away two tusks of the animal, the sub-department said.
