Embassy asks Chinese firm to stop violence against Vietnamese workers

Embassy asks Chinese firm to stop violence against Vietnamese workers

The Vietnamese Embassy in Algeria has sent a diplomatic note to the Chinese Embassy in the same country, requesting intervention to prevent violent acts perpetrated by a Chinese firm against Vietnamese guest workers there.

Vietnamese Ambassador to Algeria Vu The Hiep made the statement on Wednesday while talking to the Vietnam News Agency about the assault on the two laborers by their employer in the African country.

The victims are Dau Hoang Anh and Dao Ngoc Cuong, who were beaten by Chinese workers following the order of the Chinese supervisor at Dongyi Jiangsu Co. Ltd., a Chinese-owned company located in the Algerian city of Khenchela, on September 16-17, Ambassador Hiep said.

He added that the Chinese firm also stopped giving meals to the Vietnamese workers.

The abused workers, who sustain serious injuries, will be repatriated as soon as possible in line with their desire, Ambassador Hiep said.   The embassy and Simco Song Da, the Vietnamese company that sent the workers to Algeria, had a meeting with Dongyi Jiangsu to deal with the case and protect the legitimate rights and interests of the Vietnamese workers, the ambassador said. At the meeting, the Vietnamese sides requested that the Chinese company make written commitments to not threatening or using force against Vietnamese workers, while ensuring their safety and legitimate rights and giving them equal and fair treatment.

Meanwhile, the Chinese firm’s representative confirmed the abuse and said he was sorry for the incident, which happened for the first time and different reasons, including the language barrier.

The three sides also discussed the possibility of sending the Vietnamese workers to another working site, Ambassador Hiep said.

The Chinese firm promised to ensure absolute safety for the two injured Vietnamese at the company’s headquarters while waiting for possible repatriation to Vietnam.

Meanwhile, the two victims have expressed their wish to return to Vietnam for medical treatment and reunion with their families.
