Vietnamese actress accused of exaggerating ‘A-list’ appearance at Cannes

Vietnamese actress accused of exaggerating ‘A-list’ appearance at Cannes

The recent appearance of a Vietnamese actress on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet, which some local media outlets described as exclusive treatment for A-list stars, is in fact a twist of the truth, a Hanoi-based newswire has claimed.

In its Thursday report, Vietnamnet accused the media agency behind Le Ngoc Phuong Trinh, better known for her stage name Angela Phuong Trinh, of twisting the truth in a press release made to cover her 2016 Cannes appearance on Tuesday.

“Not only was she invited to the film premiere, Angela Phuong Trinh was also the first Vietnamese artist to have ever been featured at such a prominent spot on the festival’s red carpet, a privilege reserved only for the cast of the participating films as well as A-list stars,” the media note reads.

“She took a prioritized spot on the red carpet, at an even spacing from two other stars… while other guests walked in groups or stood aside to wait for their turn.”

Skeptical feedback flooded in about the information, with many even deeming it nothing but an empty exaggeration from the 21-year-old actress’ side, Vietnamnet wrote.

Indeed, an seven-second clip on YouTube revealed that the actress was actually one of the last to arrive at the film premiere, which explained her easily taking the hot spot, and those that ‘stood aside to wait for their turn’ were actually the cast of Spanish film ‘Julieta’ to be premiered that day.

It is a Cannes tradition to let the film’s cast be the last to appear on the red carpet as a closing walk before they all entered the theater to watch the movie, the newswire explained.

Vietnamnet’s attempts to get answers from Angela Phuong Trinh’s agency on the matter were unsuccessful, as her representative refused to give any comment.

Angela Phuong Trinh rose to fame at the age of 11 through her portrayal of a mother trapped inside her daughter’s body in a well-received television drama.

As Trinh grew older, however, the child star got herself into a series of scandals including shocking statements, plastic surgery accusations, and prostitution rumors, all of which were denied by the actress.

The incident at Cannes just added to her list of scandals, according to Vietnamnet.

This is not the first time a Vietnamese actor or actress has been revealed to be exaggerating about their Cannes appearance.

For five consecutive years from 2010 to 2014, several Vietnamese artists attended the film festival and claimed to have received equal treatment as Hollywood stars, but were later found to be attending the event as promotion boys and girls for an alcohol brand.
