Vietnam police have just suggested judicial authorities to prosecute two soccer hooligans for assaulting referees following a league game in May.

Tran Ba Hoa, a 58-year-old hailing from the northern city of Hai Phong, and his fellow-countryman Tran Tien Dung, 38, will likely be in court for “causing disorder in public places” after the police have confirmed that they had physically attacked Vo Minh Tri, a FIFA-accredited referee, and his assistant Nguyen Phong Vu on their way home on May 13 evening.

Dung used his slippers to beat Vu on his forehead while Hoa aggressively got in the car carrying the referees to kick, punch, and then throw a coconut skin at Tri, the police elaborated.

Earlier the day, Tri refereed a game between hosts TDCS Dong Thap and Vicem Hai Phong, of which Hoa and Dung are a fan, at Cao Lanh Stadium in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap.

Hai Phong lost 0-3 to Dong Thap after two of their players were sent off by Tri, who also handed a red card to one of the Hai Phong medical staff members.

Feeling angry at Tri’s refereeing, the two hooligans released their outrage on him and his colleague when they were leaving Dong Thap for Ho Chi Minh City.

After the game, Hai Phong’s coach and medical staff member were fined by the local soccer federation for protesting the referee’s decisions during the game, and the two red-carded players were suspended for a number of games for their violent reactions to Tri’s ruling.
