The civil court of Ho Chi Minh City has sentenced a Vietnamese American to seven years in prison for assaulting a young man after a road collision.
Nguyen Trung Hau, 32, the offender, received the sentence on Monday for stabbing a 20-year-old Vietnamese man, Nguyen Dang Long, with a knife on July 14, 2015 after the two quarreled over their traffic accident, according to a police report.
The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment, the report said.
The defendant admitted the crime, claiming that Long had run the lights, causing the collision.
He added that Long was the one to pick the quarrel with him first, which irritated him, and forced him to stab the man with a knife.
The jury handed down the sentence after considering the sincerity of Hau’s confession, along with his regret, compensation to the victim, and the victim’s complaint retrieval form.
According to the indictment, on July 14, 2015, Hau was carrying his wife Luu Yen Chau by bike on Nguyen Phuc Nguyen Street, en route to Cong Truong Dan Chu Roundabout, in District 3.
The incident happened at 5:00 pm at the Nguyen Phuc Nguyen-Rach Bung Binh intersection where Long, riding his bike on Rach Bung Binh Street, collided with Hau, the indictment said, adding that the two then fought against each other.
Seeing Hau hit by Long, Chau struck Long with her helmet as written in the indictment, saying that Long’s friend Nguyen Quyen stopped his vehicle and beat Hau down to the sidewalk.
Hau then rushed to his bike, taking a knife from the storage space and chasing Long and Quyen, but the two fled.
He then continued to carry his wife by his bike before encountering Long running toward him, according to the indictment.
After being punched in one of his eyes, Hau stabbed Long with the knife, causing him to be hospitalized before being arrested by police.
The stabbed man received medical treatment at the hospital and his life was saved.
