Rainstorms moving in on Gulf of Tonkin: Vietnam weather forecast

Rainstorms moving in on Gulf of Tonkin: Vietnam weather forecast

Friday, May 13, 2016, 16:24 GMT+7

As the northern trough formed in mid-week is being compressed by a high pressure system from the north, rainstorms and extreme climatic events are set to be unleashed on Vietnam’s northern provinces over the weekend and affect areas across the country, the Vietnam News Agency cited the national weather forecast center as saying.

The weather system expected to move into northern Vietnam this weekend is to create a climatic shift from scorching hot conditions to rainy episodes across the nation, causing temperatures to drop sharply, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF).

Rainstorms, accompanied by cyclones and squalls, will hit locales surrounding the Gulf of Tonkin on Friday, the NCHMF said, adding that flooding amplitudes could exceed two meters along sections of the Hong, Ma, and Thai Binh Rivers.

The NCHMF forecasts rain and squalls in northwestern areas, followed by drizzles at night. Weather conditions might also lead to hailstorms and cyclones in the period, with temperatures ranging from 21 to 33 degrees Celsius and atmospheric moisture hovering around 60-97 percent.

Hanoi and other provinces in the northeastern region will experience similar climatic changes over the weekend, with lows between 23 and 26 and highs between 27 and 30 degrees Celsius.

Coastal central provinces from Thanh Hoa to Thua Thien – Hue will have variable cloudiness in daytime and experience showers, followed by light winds, in the evening, with atmospheric moisture at 61-96 percent and temperatures between 24 and 33 degrees Celsius.

Similar weather patterns will also be seen in other central locales, including Da Nang City and Binh Thuan Province, with showers in some provinces throughout the evening before the rain dissipates at night. Temperatures will hover around 35 degrees Celsius.

Southern areas in general will be exposed to less severe conditions, with a slight drop in temperature to between 33 and 36 degrees Celsius and drizzles forecast to occur in some areas in the evening and at night.

Rain and thunderstorms are expected to hit Ho Chi Minh City on Monday and will last for the entirety of next week, according to the NCHMF.
