Nguyen Thi Anh Vien, Vietnam’s swimming star at the ongoing 28th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, stunned people on Tuesday when she cried not out of happiness over winning a gold medal, but for mistakes she had made.
At 6:06 pm (Vietnam time), Vien won the 200m women's butterfly in a time of 2:11.12s, adding her 5th championship at this year’s multi-sport event hosted by the city state.
She was seen bursting into tears upon finishing first in the race, leaving many people in wonder.
“I did not cry because I won the gold medal and broke a SEA Games record,” Vien said.
“I cried because I had made several mistakes during the competition,” the outstanding swimmer added. “I do not feel satisfied with myself when I make mistakes, even when I have won the gold medal.”
After the 200m women's butterfly, the swimmer from Can Tho went on to win her 6th gold medal in a record time of 1:59.27s in the women's 200m freestyle at 7:32 pm.
“I bagged six gold medals and broke seven records but I will not stop fighting,” Vien said. “If I’m satisfied with what I have achieved, I’m a loser now.”
“I don’t remember victory, I tries every day as if I haven’t won a thing,” the 19-year-old talent emphasized.
Vien’s quotes have gone viral and been shared on social networks by her fans who admire the young woman for her spirit.
The swimmer said she was a bit tired due to the tense schedule, but she confirmed she will quickly regain energy to continue racing.
“My tips to be strong are sleeping, eating and thinking about things that make me happy,” she said.
Due toher stunning achievement, Vien has risen to stardom and become the target of local media both during and after swimming races.
On Saturday and Sunday she grabbed four gold medals and broke five SEA Games records in the five events she competed in.
Vien added her latest victory, the 7th one at the 28th SEA Games, after winning the 400m freestyle at 4:8.66s on June 10.
