Residents and authorities of a commune in the central province of Quang Nam can breathe a sigh of relief as the strange, giant sphere that fell out of nowhere and into the locality last week has been identified as a normal air balloon.

Relevant agencies and the provincial military command have concluded after an inspection that the mysterious sphere, measuring 15 meters in diameter, is a kind of air balloon, A Lang Cung, chairman of the Za Hung Commune People’s Council, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Tuesday.

The object, which hit the ground near a local house on January 10, is made of plastic and bamboo frames, according to the official.

The balloon is attached to a kilometer-long string, while its surface is adorned with multiple photos and texts in Chinese, Lao and Thai languages.

“It could have flown from a festival in western Laos, and there is nothing abnormal here,” Cung added.

The local military command also said the air balloon might have come from a festival in Laos.

However, they are still waiting for guidance from higher-level units on what to do with the object.
