The transport ministries of Vietnam and Cambodia have signed a memorandum on building an expressway connecting Ho Chi Minh City with the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh.

The two ministries will work closely to study and implement the expressway’s construction, according to the Department of International Cooperation under Vietnam’s Ministry of Transport.

Current plans call for the expressway to run a total of 195 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh, crossing the border at Moc Bai in southern Tay Ninh Province and Bavet in southeastern Cambodia.

The US$650 million Ho Chi Minh City – Moc Bai Expressway will feature six-lanes spanning 65 kilometers, running about 4 kilometers north of National Route 22.

Japanese experts are also working with Cambodian officials to complete a feasibility report on the Bavet – Phnom Penh Expressway, which will run 160 kilometers from Bavet to the Cambodian capital.

Vietnam and Cambodia have finished sketching the initial plans for the expressway, including its direction, scale, and connection points.

Upon its completion, the expressway is expected to facilitate the movement of people and goods between the southern Vietnamese metropolis and the Cambodian capital, further strengthening bilateral friendship and cooperation between the two nations.

The expressway is also likely to boost tourist activities in the two cities.

Road trips between Ho Chi Minh City and Phnom Penh current take roughly five hours via National Route 22.
