A flyover leading to both terminals at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City is scheduled for inauguration next week, giving rise to hopes of smooth traffic at Vietnam’s busiest airport.

The Y-shaped overpass, stemming from Truong Son Street in Tan Binh District before splitting to funnel travelers towards either the domestic or international terminal at the airport will open to traffic on July 3, two months ahead of schedule.

On Wednesday, around 50 employees from the project’s contractor, T&T Co. Ltd., were busy coating the surface of the flyover.

Construction began in February and was previously expected to wrap up by the end of August.

The steel-structured overpass consumed a total investment of VND242 billion (US$10.66 million) to cover the length of the roadway leading to the airport, the 150m long branch leading to the domestic terminal, and the 300m branch leading to the international one.

The construction is hoped to help ease traffic pressure on the streets connectting to the airport, as Truong Son is effectively the only way for passengers to reach Tan Son Nhat.

Also on July 3, another major flyover located near Tan Son Nhat will open to traffic two months earlier than planned.

Located at the infamous Nguyen Thai Son Roundabout in Go Vap District, the flyover has three branches, Hoang Minh Giam – Nguyen Thai Son, Nguyen Kiem – Nguyen Thai Son and Nguyen Kiem – Hoang Minh Giam, linking the three namesake streets with one another.

Vehicles will be allowed to use the 363m Hoang Minh Giam – Nguyen Thai Son branch on Monday next week.

The branch starts from Hoang Minh Giam and separates into Nguyen Kiem and Nguyen Thai Son in the middle.

Construction is being sped up for the other two branches to be inaugurated by the end of this year.

Located less than 2km from Tan Son Nhat, the Nguyen Thai Son flyover is also expected to help facilitate airport commuters.

Tan Son Nhat is Vietnam’s busiest airdrome, which receives 32.5 million passengers per year, well in excess of its design capacity of 25 million.
