Storm Talas wrecks havoc in north-central Vietnam

Monday, July 17, 2017, 11:58 GMT+7

At least one person has been killed, 13 boat crew are missing and thousands of homes have been damaged after typhoon Talas made landfall in north-central Vietnam early on Monday morning.

The typhoon reached Nghe An and Ha Tinh Provinces at around 1:00 am on Monday.

As of 5:00 am on Monday morning in Nghe An, one person had been killed, 13 boat crew remained missing and 2,751 houses had been devastated, with hundreds of hectares of plantations also destroyed.

A ship carrying 4,700 metric tons of coal and 13 crew members sank while taking shelter off Cua Lo Town, with all 13 yet to be reported safe.

The rain and strong wind diminished by around 6:30 am, leaving hundreds of trees uprooted and countless branches lying across the streets.

In Ha Tinh, several major roads including Nguyen Du and Xo Viet Nghe Tinh were inundated, causing vehicles to break down.

According to Ngo Duc Hoi, an official from the provincial Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention, the tropical storm has caused immense damage to local farms, plants, and homes.

There have been no casualties reported so far, Hoi added.

Water levels in rivers in the north-central region are rising at an alarming pace, posing a high risk of flooding in nearby areas.

Torrential rain has occurred in most northern provinces and is expected to re-occur over the next two to three days.

Storm Talas is forecast to travel westward at 20 km per hour and weaken into a tropical depression and later a low-pressure zone.
