Team Vietnam secured eight gold medals at the 2017 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Malaysia on Tuesday, with three female athletes shining in their evening competitions.

Vietnam won four gold medals in the morning thanks to male gymnast Dang Nam and three women -- fencer Nguyen Thi Nhu Hoa, Karate-do artist Nguyen Thi Hong Anh and pétanque player Nguyen Thi Thi.

However all eyes were on the swimming and track-and-field events in the evening, with three Vietnamese women considered gold medal contenders; talented swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien, sprinter Le Tu Chinh and hurdler Nguyen Thi Huyen.

Anh Vien began the women’s 200m breaststroke event confidently , and never looked back to take gold with a time of 2:13.64, smashing the SEA Games record set by herself in the 2015 edition in Singapore.

In the women’s 400m freestyle final on the same night, Anh Vien left her opponents behind from the beginning and easily won her second gold medal of the day, touching the wall in 4:10.96, nearly five seconds faster than the Thai silver medalist.

On Monday, Vien also broke the SEA Games record to win the women’s 100m breaststroke gold.

Shortly after the swimming competition ended, the track-and-field finals began, with Vietnam’s Huyen grabbing the women’s 400m hurdles gold medal. Huyen crossed the finish line in 56.06 seconds, smashing her own SEA Games record.

t the women’s 100m event, sprinter Tu Chinh won gold in a time of 11.56 seconds, despite it not being her personal best.

As of 10:00 am on Wednesday, Vietnam remained in third spot on the medal table, with 46 medals in total. Host Malaysia lead with 93 medals, including 40 gold.
