Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper has established a fund to support residents in north-central Vietnam, whose lives have been devastated by Typhoon Doksuri.
The tropical storm, which was considered the strongest to hit Vietnam in the past decade, made landfall in the north-central region on Friday afternoon, packing winds at 103 to 133km an hour and squalls at up to 183km per hour.
Provinces from Thanh Hoa to Thua Thien-Hue were directly impacted by the storm, among which Ha Tinh and Quang Binh Provinces were hit the hardest.
Reports have showed that four people had been killed and 21 others injured by Doksuri.
Over 121,200 houses were damaged and hundreds of thousands of residents lost their homes to the storm.
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has visited the affected residents in Nghe An and Ha Tinh Provinces, urging authorities to promptly deal with the consequences and stabilize the lives of local people.
Repairs have also been carried out at local schools so that students can resume their studies soon.
Tuoi Tre’s editorial board on Saturday decided to provide an emergency support package worth VND500 million (US$ 21,962) for the victims in Ha Tinh and Quang Binh.
The money will be given to 100 families that suffer the most.
Readers can also contribute to the efforts from Sunday, September 17.
