The addition of an anti-flood pump system to a local Ho Chi Minh City street is being hailed as a success after effectively clearing the road of all floodwater in just 15 minutes.

A section of Nguyen Huu Canh Street in Binh Thanh District was inundated by rain and rising tidewaters on Thursday evening, causing serious congestion during the evening rush-hour.

According to the observation of Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reporters, the traffic buildup was mainly on a one-kilometer section of road where flooded streets resulted in vehicle breakdowns and gridlocked traffic.

Fortunately, the situation did not last long. Thanks to a specialized pumping machine recently installed in the area, the floodwater was pumped from Nguyen Huu Canh Street into the Saigon River in just 15 minutes.

According to Thai Quoc Hung, a resident living on Nguyen Huu Canh, the road is continuously subject to inundation during rising tides or rain, whether heavy of light.

“Thanks to the new technology, flooding is no longer a problem.  Local people are very happy about it,” Hung stated.

Nguyen Van Long, a local taxi driver, also expressed joy that he would no longer need to worry about an engine breakdown while driving through Nguyen Huu Canh Street during floods.

“The pump system should be installed in other flood-prone areas of the city,” he added.

The machine has proven itself, being able drain floodwater in a short period, said Nguyen Hoang Anh Dung, deputy director of the city’s Steering Center of the Urban Flood Control Program.
