Devoted Vietnamese doctor retires with tearful goodbye from colleagues, patients

Tuesday, October 03, 2017, 11:17 GMT+7

The National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion (NIHBT) was filled with emotion and tears on Monday morning, as its top doctor retired after nearly 15 years steering, and transforming, the Hanoi health center.

During his last morning at the NIHBT, Professor Nguyen Anh Tri joined his colleagues in the regular Monday morning flag raising ceremony, after which he was stunned to see hundreds of patients waiting to bid him farewell.

As seen in photos provided by the institute, patients of all ages stood in line, some with tears in their eyes, as the professor greeted them.

Some children hugged Tri while others stood around, overcome with emotion.

Many of the institute’s staff members were also seen in line waiting to say goodbye to their former leader.

Tri visited every one of the institute’s departments and bid farewell to his colleagues, many of whom hugged him with teary eyes.

Many of the NIHBT’s doctors expressed their love for professor Tri on their social media page.

Tri led the NIHBT from March 2003 to September 2017, with his retirement effective from Sunday.

During his leadership, Tri transformed the health center via a number of reforms and innovations.

He tripled the number of beds at the clinic, adapting numerous new treatment technologies and initiating multiple successful blood donation campaigns.

Professor Tri has contributed to the transformation of the hematology and blood transfusion sector in northern Vietnam.

Donated blood now accounts for most of the blood used at hospitals in the region, thanks to the success of his signature blood donation campaigns.

Following his retirement, Tri will continue his public service in a new role, a delegate of the lawmaking National Assembly.

Tri was the only self-nominated candidate in the 2016 National Assembly election to win a legislative seat.

Below are some photos of Tri’s tearful goodbye:
