The newly appointed coach of Vietnam’s national football team, Park Hang-Seo, expressed his confidence in an interview with Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper ahead of his arrival in Vietnam.

The South Korean shared that he would not have taken the job if he was not confident in his abilities and experiences.

Park was Guus Hiddink's assistant when the Dutch coach led South Korea’s squad in 2002.

The Vietnam Football Federation announced Park’s appointment as head coach of the national team on September 29 under a two-year contract.

The position previously belonged to former defender Nguyen Huu Thang, who resigned in August after Vietnam failed to advance to the semi-finals at the 2017 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur

In the interview, the ex-Gangwon FC coach said that leading a national team had always been his dream and he pounced on the opportunity when he heard that the VFF was looking for a new coach.

Park added that his knowledge of Vietnamese football comes from media, his representative, and Xuan Truong, a Vietnamese footballer who plays on both his country’s national team and for Gangwon FC in the K-League.

The 58-year-old coach was also impressed by Vietnam U20s’ presence at the FIFA U20 World Cup in South Korea this year.

When asked whether knowing that his compatriots Choi Yoon Kyum and Cho Yoon Hwan had not been successful with their Vietnamese clubs made him nervous, Park expressed his intention to build a reputation for coaches from South Korea through positive match results.

Park is set to be in Hanoi on October 10 for an Asian Cup 2019 qualifying match between his new team and Cambodia, before being officially presented as the new coach.

The South Korean’s first game in charge of the team will take place on November 14, when Vietnam play Afghanistan, also in the Asian Cup 2019 qualification stage.
