In Vietnam, company rewards hard-working employees with gold

Wednesday, February 17, 2016, 16:02 GMT+7

A private company based in Tien Giang, a province in the Mekong Delta region of southern Vietnam, spared no expense on their new-year gratuity after approximately 2.5lbs worth of gold was handed out to outstanding employees on Tuesday in recognition of their contribution throughout 2015.

It is the third year running the company has implemented the practice, according to Nguyen Tan Thanh, chairman of the board of members of Hoan Vinh Ltd., the firm in question.

In 2013, Hoan Vinh first honored 65 employees that same way, Thanh said.

This number tripled a year later, with 186 employees earning the reward, while this year, 300 maces (a measurement unit commonly used for gold in Vietnam, 1 mace ~ 3.75 grams) have been handed out on the occasion of the new lunar year.

“Knowing that my effort and accomplishments at work are acknowledged and appreciated by the company through such bonuses is a motivation for me to dedicate my loyalty to the job,” Doan Thi My Duyen, a production line attendant at Hoan Vinh, said.

The company also prepared a pair of diamond rings priced at VND15 million (US$685) as a wedding gift for one newly married couple, Pham Ngo Hoang and Nguyen Tran Kim Loan, both employed by the company.

Hoan Vinh currently employs 700 workers and is considered a pioneer in hiring the handicapped and people with criminal backgrounds with a view to opening up new job opportunities.

Uneducated children of disadvantaged families who are 15-16 years of age are also taken in by the company for free vocational training courses with a chance to work for it upon completion, should they wish to.

Also on the launch day of this new working year, the company held a send-off ceremony for six employees who were departing for military duties.

“We are more than willing to take these workers back after they return from their service, if they still wish to be a part of the company. Our company will also continue to employ the practice of rewarding hard-working employees with gold in the years to come,” Thanh said.
