-- At the Policy Dialogue on Vietnam-U.S. relations hosted by the Asia Society on September 28 (New York time) on the sidelines of the ongoing 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Vietnamese State President Truong Tan Sang warned that the Asia-Pacific region is currently faced with myriad challenges and risks regarding sovereignty disputes.

-- The Saigon Water Supply Corporation has told the Ho Chi Minh City Preventative Health Center that it had improved the quality of tap water in four places in the city. A check on tap water supplies in the southern economic hub conducted by the center in July this year showed that the content of chlorine, widely used to purify water as a disinfectant and bleaching agent, fails to meet required standards.

-- Several international experts advised at a workshop organized on Tuesday that many anti-flooding structures should be built to better cope with serious inundation that has plagued Ho Chi Minh City and its residents in recent years.

-- The High Command of the Vietnam Coast Guard of Zone 4, which is headquartered on Phu Quoc Island, located off the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang, said they have seized a Thai-flagged oil tanker. The tanker was caught red-handed illegally pumping oil into a Vietnamese ship in Vietnamese waters on Saturday last week.

-- The Vietnamese government has just released a decree stipulating that from November 15, 2015 onward, Vietnamese people who reside overseas and their foreign spouses and children will enjoy a visa-free policy when entering the Southeast Asian country.

-- A recently released decision by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, to take effect on November 6, has ruled that no tourism activity be allowed on Binh Ba Island, which is the largest in Cam Ranh Bay off the south-central province of Khanh Hoa and a popular tourist attraction. The move is meant to ensure security and safety for the Cam Ranh Military Base.

-- A research group under Harvard University announced at a workshop in Vietnam on Tuesday the startling findings of their study regarding detrimental health impacts caused by emissions from coal-fueled thermoelectricity plants in Southeast Asia and Vietnam.

-- The Ministry of Education organized a ceremony in Hanoi on Tuesday to mark the 70th anniversary of the Vietnamese education sector.

Lifestyle

-- The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has announced that “Trung So” (Jackpot), a Vietnamese comedy film directed by expat actor/director Dustin Nguyen, had been selected for the preliminary qualification round for the Best Foreign Language Film Award at the 88th Academy Awards, slated to run in late February 2016.
