Pork vendors sabotage rival stall with dirty liquid in northern Vietnam

Pork vendors sabotage rival stall with dirty liquid in northern Vietnam

Friday, May 12, 2017, 13:33 GMT+7

A woman had her pork doused in a mix of sewage water and engine lubricant by two other vendors after they accused of the victim of ‘dumping’ the meat price at a market in the northern city of Hai Phong.

A viral video posted on Facebook on Thursday shows the victim, appearing too hurt to cry, sitting next to a pile of pork covered in black liquid.

Police were able to identify the incident as having taken place at the Luong Van Can Market in May To Ward, Ngo Quyen District.  The attackers, a pork vendor named V. and her daughter, were summoned to work with police.

May To police confirmed to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Friday they had transferred the case to higher authorities within the Ngo Quyen District police unit.

According to the police report, the victim, referred to as X., was selling pork at the market at 8:00 am on Thursday when the two women showed up and splashed the dirty liquid mixture onto her and her meat.

The attackers also threatened to continue abusing X. on her way home after the market session.

X. told police that she has sold seafood at the market since 2014 and only made a temporary switch to selling pork a few days ago when the pig farm run by her family suffered big losses from declining live pig prices.

X.’s ability to directly source the meat meant she was able to sell it at only VND20,000 to VND50,000, roughly US$1-$2, per kilogram, much cheaper than other vendors at Luong Van Can.

“A few days ago some people told me to stop selling pork here,” X. said.

“I told them that I had no plan to become a pork seller here, and that I would return to selling seafood once my family’s pig herd is finished.”

One vegetable trader at the market told Tuoi Tre that the mother and daughter had been in conflict with X. for several days before the incident over X.’s low sale price.

“No one wants to sell meat at dirt cheap prices, but sometimes they have no choice,” she said.

“We didn’t expect V. and her daughter to go so low.”

Tuoi Tre visited the market on Friday morning and found V.’s pork stall closed.
