-- President Hassan Rouhani of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Vietnamese State President Tran Dai Quang on Thursday presided over the signing ceremony of an agreement to allow visa exemption for holders of diplomatic passports, as the Iranian leader spent his second day of a three-day working visit to Vietnam.

Society

-- Large-scale archaeological explorations began on Thursday in central Vietnam’s Hue City in search for the tomb of 18th-century Vietnamese Emperor Quang Trung, also known by his birth name Nguyen Hue, whose whereabouts have been a topic of interest for historians and archeologists in the country for the past 75 years.

-- The Border Defense Force of Phu Yen Province in south-central Vietnam on Thursday added to its fleet a modern patrol vessel for sea-bound rescue missions and protection Vietnam’s maritime sovereignty.

-- Around 200 Vietnamese people die every day from cancer, while 130,000 new patients are diagnosed with the disease annually, director Tran van Thuan of K Hospital in Hanoi said at a conference on cancer prevention on Thursday.

-- A middle-aged male patient from the south-central province of Binh Thuan has recently been admitted to hospital after his penis reportedly ‘broke’ during an intercourse engagement with his partner, apparently using exotic bedtime positions.

-- An unannounced government inspection was launched Thursday into the Petrovietnam Construction Joint Stock Corporation (PVC) in regard of the wrongdoings at the corporation that had led to the apprehension of its former director general Vu Duc Thuan and the escape from Vietnam of its ex-chairman Trinh Xuan Thanh, who is wanted internationally.

-- Vietnam police have worked with Japanese newspaper Mainichi to hold training classes on traffic safety for secondary students in Hanoi with the appearance of the famous Japanese comic robotic cat Doraemon.

Sports

-- Vietnam national male football (soccer) team on Thursday evening thrilled fans with a 5-2 win against North Korea in a friendly match at Thong Nhat Stadium in Ho Chi Minh City to prepare for the upcoming 2016 AFF Suzuki Cup to commence in Myanmar in November. This is Vietnam’s first win after seven times facing the Asian soccer giant.
