The victim was identified as Anton Kobnev, 34, a Russian national, who worked in the southern city of Vung Tau, said Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Hong Ky, deputy head of the Nha Trang police in Khanh Hoa Province. Ky said that the police found a suicide note reading, “Today is the day of my death. Live happily!” upon examination of the man’s room on the 8th floor of the 4-star Galliot Hotel on Monday.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Ky, Anton may have jumped out of the window to the ground. On Saturday, Kobnev and his wife traveled to Nha Trang and stayed in room 801 of the Galliot Hotel on Nguyen Thien Thuat Street in the backpacker area of the city. The man was previously believed to have fallen from the sixth floor to the front of the hotel at 4:00 am Monday.

The window of his room was open then, witnesses said.

His body was found by some passers-by, who covered it with plastic and called police to the scene.

Yesterday afternoon the provincial Department of Foreign Affairs sent a note to the Russian Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh, notifying of Kobnev’s death and asking for coordination in handling the case, said Nguyen Quoc Tram, deputy director of the department.  The body of the man has been taken to Khanh Hoa Province Hospital. Police are continuing their investigation into the case.
