Politics

-- State President Truong Tan Sang had a meeting on Wednesday with visiting British Prime Minister David Cameron. During the event, the Vietnamese president expressed his appreciation for the cooperative relations between Vietnam and the UK. 

Society

-- Animals, rollerblading and coffee vendors will be prohibited from the Nguyen Hue pedestrian street in District 1, as the People’s Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City has recently asked the area’s management board to take strict measures to ensure security and the good image of the downtown zone.

-- Deputy Prime Minister Pham Binh Minh has requested competent agencies to finish a draft regulation on visa exemption for Vietnamese immigrants from other countries and people who are wives, husbands and children of Vietnamese immigrants overseas.

-- Around 8,500 households in the northern province of Quang Ninh are facing a lack of clean water after landslides caused by heavy rains in recently times have broken the pipe system of the Dien Vong water plant. Repair work is expected to be finished by August 5.

-- On July 29, Pham Quang Hieu and Ngo Xuan Long were sentenced to two years and one year in jail, respectively, by the People's Court of Hanoi for using computer networks, telecommunications networks, the Internet or digital devices to appropriate property. They were arrested last year after carrying out a scam to dupe mobile phone users into joining a false promotional program claimed to be offered by military-run Viettel, Vietnam’s largest mobile network operator.

Business

-- Around 12,350 Vietnamese workers, including 4,117 females, have rushed to work overseas this month, mainly in Taiwan, Japan, South Korea and Malaysia.

-- The Vietnam Leather, Footwear and Handbag Association said footwear exports to the U.S. have increased sharply. According to the latest statistics, the turnover of footwear shipments to the U.S. had reached US$2 billion by the end of June, up 30.2 percent compared to the same period last year.

Lifestyle

-- An exhibition on Vietnam’s sovereignty over the Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelagoes kicked off on Wednesday in the southern province of Long An. The event running through August 2 displays numerous objects, nearly 100 maps and documents confirming Vietnam's sovereignty over the islands.

-- A young Vietnamese woman is running her project on promoting the image of the Vietnamese traditional costume ao dai to the world. Thuy Thuy, 22, who said he owns 60 ao dai, has created a Facebook page named “ Ao dai around the world” where Vietnamese people across the globe can share photos capturing them wearing the traditional costume.
