A Vietnamese tourist was killed in a crash between his hired watercraft and a passenger canoe off a beach in southern Vietnam on Friday.
Nguyen Thanh Hung, 44, and his friend was vacationing at the My Lan tourism area on Bai Sao Beach on Phu Quoc Island, off Kien Giang Province, when he wanted to drive a watercraft, according to local authorities.
Shortly after he started the vessel, hired from My Lan, Hung apparently lost control of the speed and crashed into the canoe, operated by Phong Ngoc Co.
Both of the tourists on the watercraft were thrown into the sea following the hard collision, according to eyewitnesses.
Rescuers from the resort beach managed to save the tourists and took them ashore.
Both victims were conscious when rescued. But ten minutes after being taken ashore, Hung developed fatigue and vomiting.
He was then taken to the Military Hospital 78, located 5 km away from the beach, but died as soon as reaching there.
Hung should have been accompanied by a My Lan employee on the watercraft, who will give him driving instruction, as per the resort’s regulations.
However, the deceased tourist, hailing from the northern province of Bac Ninh, wanted to drive the watercraft by himself, and thus made a written commitment to be responsible for any accidents that might arise during his ride.
The family of the tourist wanted to take his body back to Bac Ninh the same day by air, and committed to not filing any complaint related to his death, according to a source close to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper.
