A Vietnamese drug addict was arrested three hours after he snatched a bag from a Japanese visitor in UNESCO-recognized Hoi An Ancient Town in central Vietnam on Wednesday, according to local police.
Preliminary investigation showed that when Fumio Omori, a 64-year-old Japanese national, was bicycling on Hai Ba Trung Street in the tourism town, a young man driving a motorcycle approached him, snatched his bag, and then sped away.
The robbery was then reported to local police who captured the snatcher three hours later.
The robber is Dinh Cong Duc, a Hoi An native. Duc admitted to committing the crime at the police station.
Police officers said Duc had robbed many foreign tourists in Hoi An, located in Quang Nam Province, in the same manner.
After robbing his victims of their assets, Duc used the money obtained from selling the items in Da Nang City, about 88km to the north of Quang Nam, to buy drugs.
Police returned the snatched bag to Fumio Omori the same day. Further investigations are underway.
