A bitter cold is covering northern Vietnam and hoarfrost formed from frozen steam can be seen everywhere in Sa Pa Town, Lao Cai Province, said the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Friday.

At 7 am on Thursday, the temperature in the central area of Sa pa dropped to 1 degree Celsius while in the O Quy Ho pass, the weather is colder, at 0 degree. However, snow has yet to fall in Sa Pa while tourists there are excitedly waiting for a snowfall there, as it happened at the same period last year. The same 0 degree Celsius cold was recorded in Ha Giang Province while Sin Ho in Lai Chau province saw a bit higher temperature, at 0.9 degree. Less chilling weather, at 9.3 degree, was seen in Hanoi while in other northern localities, the temperature ranged from 8-10 degrees.

At 6 am on Friday morning, the average temperature in Hanoi was 11.4 degrees, while the colder weather was recorded in most of the other northern localities. The chill in the region, especially in early morning and at night, will continue in the next several days, the center said. The cold snap is moving south, and has affected central and southern parts of the country.    In Ho Chi Minh City, the lowest temperature was 22 degrees, lower than the 24-25 degrees in previous days. The coldest in the southern region on Thursday was recorded in Binh Phuoc province at 19.4 degrees.

At 12 pm on Friday, the lowest temperatures in HCMC, the coastal city of Vung Tau City and the Mekong Delta of Can Tho were the same - 23 degrees.
