Rescuers in Quang Nam Province, central Vietnam worked hard to save more than 20 drowning swimmers who were among those bathing at Tam Thanh Beach to cool off in the scorching heat.
During the recent five-day public holiday, which lasted from April 29 to May 3, thousands of people flocked to the beach every day to escape the heat, the management board of the beach, located in the provincial city of Tam Ky, said on Monday.
On Sunday during which the temperatures stayed high between 38 and 40 degrees Celsius, more than 5,000 people packed the beach, taking refuge from the baking heat.
On the day, rescuers saved over 20 drowning beachgoers, many of them children.
Some local residents said the high temperatures made them tired, so the beach provided them with a great relief from the blistering heat.
Given a large volume of beachgoers, eight members of the beach management board, including three lifeguards and five rescuers, have to stand guard along the beach to ensure safety of the beachgoers.
In the upcoming days, the central coastal province of Quang Nam is forecast to experience further high temperatures at a maximum of some 35 degrees Celsius, according to the national weather center.
Local inhabitants, therefore, are advised to stay vigilant when going to the beach, especially keeping an eye on their children.
