A plan to establish a ‘single ladies market’ in Can Tho City, southern Vietnam has drawn attention from the public and sparked controversy amongst local Internet users.

Many social media users are puzzled over what exactly the market is and what kinds of goods it sells.

Ha Vu Son, director of the Can Tho City Department of Industry and Trade, said on Thursday that it had received a dispatch from the office of the municipal People’s Committee supporting the establishment of the Mekong single ladies market on Con Au Islet in Cai Rang District.

The department, which seems equally puzzled about the market, is contacting Nova Land Investment Group Corporation to see how the investor will run the market.

The company might only organize a night fair at Azerai Resort Can Tho to sell tourism products for visitors, the representative of the department said.

“Or, the company may build the market for single ladies to sell goods during a promotional program.”

“Perhaps, the market is set to offer discounts to single ladies who are staying at the resort,” Son said.
