The Ho Chi Minh Traffic Safety Committee has called on U.S.-based charitable organization Bloomberg Philanthropies to equip local traffic police officers with cameras that can be fixed on their helmets, the deputy head of the committee, has said. Nguyen Ngoc Tuong, deputy chief of the committee, on Tuesday said his agency had a meeting with Bloomberg Philanthropies about a program to strengthen the enforcement of road safety rules. At the meeting, the committee suggested that the charity provide 200 helmet cameras to help improve traffic police officers’ ability to supervise and handle traffic rule violations, Tuong said. The committee also called on Bloomberg Philanthropies to provide city traffic cops with 50 breathalyzers and 10 cameras able to automatically measure vehicle speed.   Ho Chi Minh City is one of the ten cities in the world benefiting from Bloomberg Philanthropies’ funding for programs that help enhance traffic capabilities, alleviate road accidents, and minimize resulting death tolls.    As shown on its website, Bloomberg Philanthropies, headquartered in New York City, encompasses all of the charitable giving for founder Michael R. Bloomberg. The charity foundation focuses its resources on five areas: the environment, public health, the arts, government innovation, and education, its website said. According to the Traffic Safety Committee, the number of traffic accidents and the resulting deaths and injuries in Ho Chi Minh City all recorded a year-on-year increase in the first two months of this year. Specifically, 759 traffic accidents happened in the January-February period, killing 138 people and wounding 686 others.

Compared to the same period last year, the number of accidents in the two-month span was higher by four, while the death toll and the number of injured people were also higher by six and eight respectively.
