As many as 32,000 packs of foreign cigarettes illicitly brought into Vietnam have been detected and confiscated in two separate cases in Binh Phuoc and An Giang provinces.

In an early morning patrol on Friday, anti-smuggling officers in the southern province of Binh Phuoc caught a truck red-handed as it was transporting 5,500 cigarette packs with dubious origin.

These include 4,000 packs of Jet and 1,500 packs of Hero tobaccos.

The driver, Hoang Van Binh, 23, hailing from Binh Duong Province, confessed to police that he was hired to transport the illicit products from Hoa Lu border gate to Ho Chi Minh City for distribution.

Anti-smuggling officers in the Mekong Delta province of An Giang have also cracked down on two attempts to illegally bring cigarette and sugar from Cambodia to Vietnam.

Officers in Tinh Bien District seized 26,500 packs of smuggled cigarettes that are worth VND300 million, while five boats carrying 12.5 tons of sugar from Cambodia were also pulled over. The sugar fetches nearly VND190 million.

Officers said they have received several threatens via phone calls from anonymous people who wanted to intervene and get back the confiscated products.
