-- Vietnamese lawmakers are debating a bill that would possibly allow the imprisonment of those scattering nails and pointed objects to deflate motorbike and car tires on streets for up to 12 years. These convicts would also be fined VND500 million (US$22,200).

-- Hanoi authorities yesterday set up an inspection team to check the development of a housing, shopping center, and office complex near the Ba Dinh Square.

-- A truck broke down when it was in the middle of the tunnel crossing the Saigon River on Monday, sending dense smoke to cover a part of the underwater passage for around five minutes before rescue teams arrived at the scene. No casualties were reported. The truck was safely taken out of the tunnel later the same day.

-- Tra Vinh City, which is the capital of Tra Vinh Province, and Phu Quoc Island, a district of Kien Giang Province in the Mekong Delta, were under nearly half a meter of floodwater after a heavy rain on Monday.

-- A new bus route will soon be launched to connect Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Tan Binh District with Ben Thanh Market in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City.

-- Bui Duy Nghia, chairman of the board of directors of the Vietnam Sports Shareholding Company, has been arrested for allegedly “abusing his power and post to appropriate assets.”

-- Ho Chi Minh City authorities have suggested that the operator of the Tan Cang – Cat Lai Port relocate its open storage space, containing 332 containers of flammable chemicals. The 2.8 hectare area is very close to two residential areas and just 100m from three schools.

-- Banks in Vietnam announced Monday morning lower interest rates for deposits in U.S. dollars after the State Bank imposed new interest of 0-0.25 percent. Experts agreed that it is a necessary move to stabilize the domestic exchange rate and strengthen the Vietnamese dong.

-- The export turnover of Vietnamese vegetables is estimated to reach $2 billion this year.

-- The People’s Committee of Can Tho City in the Mekong Delta has approved the planning of an ecological travel resort on Con Au Islet in Cai Rang District.

-- J-League 2 football club Mito HollyHock has agreed to pay Vietnam’s Hoang Anh Gia Lai $100,000 in return for Vietnamese striker Cong Phuong, according to a source close to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper.
