-- Vietnam's State President Tran Dai Quang and Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on Monday extended their congratulations to President Donald Trump on the U.S. Independence Day (Fourth of July).

Society

-- A fire broke out at the construction site of the Landmark Plus tower within the Vinhomes Central Park in Ho Chi Minh City at 11:30 am on Monday and was quickly distinguished in 30 minutes.

-- A driver who ran away after being pulled over by traffic police in the north-central province of Ha Tinh with one of the officers gripping over the rear-view mirror of his trailer truck last week has been placed under investigation into charges of "acting against law enforcement officers," police said on Monday.

-- The operator of Ho Chi Minh City buses said on Monday it is slated to build 85 new bus stops across the city in the second half of this year and renovate 17 aging ones to better meet commuters' demand.

-- Phan Thi My Thanh, deputy secretary of the decision-making Party Committee of the southern province of Dong Nai, has received a disciplinary warning for violating the anti-corruption law.

-- Ho Chi Minh City administrators on Monday launched a new mobile app, allowing residents to report such incidents as traffic jams, road damage or water pipeline breaks to authorities via their smartphones.

Business

-- The Vietnam International Bank has reached an agreement with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia to acquire its Ho Chi Minh City branch, the local commercial lender announced without disclosing the value of the deal on Monday.

-- Vietnam’s exports are forecast to increase 10-11 percent year on year to US$195 billion in 2017, overshooting the target set by the government by 6-7 percent, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has announced.

-- The Ministry of Finance has insisted on increasing the environmental protection tax on fuel to VND8,000 a liter from the current VND3,000 a liter from July 2018, despite objections from experts and members of the public.

-- More cases in which ATM cardholders have money in their accounts stolen overnight have been reported by local banks, which advise users to strengthen their PIN.

-- The much-anticipated expressway connecting Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta hub of Can Tho, consuming a huge investment of $704.85 million, will reach completion by 2020, Minister of Transport Truong Quang Nghia asserted at a meeting on Monday.
