-- Vietnam organized flag-hoisting ceremonies in its two biggest cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City on Tuesday to mark the 50th official establishment anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Society

-- The Food Safety Department in the central city of Da Nang revealed on Tuesday they had slapped a fine of VND4 million (US$174) on a restaurant located in Son Tra District for serving a maggot-infested dish to a local diner, who later complained on social media.

-- Statistics released by the Ministry of Health show that more than 78,000 patients have come down with dengue fever since early 2017, with 20 deaths recorded, including the latest case of a woman in Hanoi who died on Monday during the outbreak of the mosquito-borne disease, which has been battering localities across the country.

-- Deputy Minister of Defense Tran Don on Tuesday affirmed they will remove kiosks and filling stations located in the vicinity of the overloaded Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City within August and will not grant permits to new economic projects.

-- Nearly 50 assaults targeted at reporters have been recorded nationwide over the past five years, according to the Vietnam Journalists Association’s statistics released at a seminar on Tuesday.

-- Customs officers at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City disclosed on Tuesday they captured a 37-year-old Vietnamese woman for trafficking four packs of heroin hidden in her luggage as soon as she got off a plane from Brazil on Monday night. 

Business

-- The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam revealed on Tuesday four airlines canceled 177 flights out of  25,657 ones within July, up 0.1 percent against the same period last year. 

-- Ho Chi Minh City has received a total inbound remittance of approximately US$2.6 billion within the first seven months of 2017, or a 1.5-percent year-on-year rise, according to Nguyen Hoang Minh, deputy director of the city’s branch of the State Bank of Vietnam.  

Education

-- Dozens of caring parents stayed put overnight since Monday morning at the entrance to an elementary school situated in Trang Bom District in Dong Nai Province, which neighbors Ho Chi Minh City, in hopes of securing their child a place in its first-grade classes.
