Police in southern Ca Mau Province have indicted a senior doctor for violations of regulations medical examination and treatment that led to the death of a pregnant woman at her own clinic last month. The indicted doctor is Le My Nuong, who is head of the obstetrics department of the Dam Doi District General Hospital. She operates her own clinic at Dam Doi town. According to the case file, at 4:30 on August 8, Huynh Van Hoi, 47, took his wife Tran Thanh Chi, 41, to Nuong’s clinic for an antenatal examination. The doctor said Chi showed signs of giving birth, so Chi decided to stay there for childbearing. Fifteen minutes after giving birth, the woman suffered a hemorrhage and her family wanted to take her to a hospital for treatment but Dr. Nuong did not agree. At 8:15 pm the family continued requesting Chi be transferred to the Dam Doi District General hospital and Dr. Nuong agreed. Despite intensive treatment, Chi died later at 1:35 am on August 23. Recalling the death of his wife, Hoi said, “At 6 pm, Chi gave birth to a boy weighing 3.2 kilograms. At that time, Dr Nuong said that my wife’s health condition was stable, but she later said my wife suffered a hemorrhage. About five hours after being transferred, my wife died.” Following the woman’s death, the Dam Doi District Health Department suspended Nuong’s clinic and the hospital also suspended her from work for investigation. According to initial investigation, Chi died from a blood coagulation disorder and postpartum hemorrhage. Investigators said that Nuong has violated regulations on medical examinational and treatment. Specifically, she had practiced beyond allowable scopes and thereby caused serious consequences. Earlier on August 28, the Health Ministry asked the provincial Health Department to investigate the cause of Chi’s death.
