Travel trends, just like any other are constantly changing. Each season the wind blows in change that affects the way people view their time off. The savvy traveler paves the way in how the industry caters to those looking for the perfect eco-friendly getaway. Thankfully, these individuals have changed the trends to reflect the eco-conscious wave that has hit the mainstream.

Laying the Groundwork of Responsibility Six Senses Con Dao started off on the right foot two years ago, by winning the award for Best International Small Hotel Construction and Design, at the International Commercial Property Awards in 2010. By taking the bull by the horns from the very beginning, Six Senses Con Dao laid the groundwork for a successful resort running a low carbon to operation ratio that is the envy of the industry.

From the smallest detail in construction to the most minute management practice, Six Senses has been labeled a highly reputable, distinguished eco-travel destination off the southeast coast in Vietnam.

When recognizing the resort for the accomplishments, even before opening to the public, Chairman of the International Property Awards Association commented, “There are some incredibly strong roots being established for the future growth and generation of properties that are more attractive to look at, safer, kinder to the environment, smarter and able to deliver a better quality of life for those who live and work in them.”

Six Senses Con Dao has its roots firmly established. The resort’s approach first looked at the layout of the land and then built its plans on how it could work within the environment. By using sustainable and renewable building practices, the resort ensured that responsibility started even before the first foundation was laid.

Each villa was carefully planned and constructed to utilize the elements of wind, light, and shade that nature provides, so the surrounding habitat weaved its way into the resort.

Ongoing, Efficient Practices Using the strictest standards in the industry, set up by the global tourism and travel industry’s certification program for sustainable tourism (Green Globe), the resort adheres to well established and proven techniques to demonstrate its commitment to excellence.

To reduce its carbon footprint, Six Senses Con Dao uses produce from local farms, a majority of which is organically certified. All the seafood that is served at the resort is outsourced through local fisherman. Where else would you get fish from on a tropical island?

To reduce the carbon emissions that it affects not just on the resort but also through its suppliers, Six Senses Con Dao has a strict policy on how often it uses air freight for produce that is not available on the island and they request that delivered packaging is reduced to a minimum.

Like a good neighbor, wet garbage is processed for compost and there is a strict recycling policy on resort grounds. Also, the kitchen uses only biodegradable cling film. Another carbon reducer is the practice of air drying all employee uniforms in the sunlight and ocean breezes that proliferate on the island.

Not only do they use biodegradable cleaning solutions and organic fertilizers, but they have reduced the use of other chemicals by eliminating chlorine in the pools, opting instead for locally produced rock salt.

How does a five star resort in the middle of the ocean stand at the forefront of an industry surrounded with more at its disposal? That’s the secret.

Head to Six Senses Con Dao and establish secrets of your own during an eco-friendly vacation of a lifetime.
