-- The solidarity between Vietnam and Cambodia is an invaluable treasure that had been passed on from generations to generations, Ho Chi Minh City chairman Nguyen Thanh Phong said on Thursday at a ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of Vietnam-Cambodia diplomatic ties (June 24, 1967 – June 24, 2017).

-- Vietnam and Russia are looking to bring bilateral comprehensive partnership to full throttle, according to a joint statement made on Thursday by Vietnamese State President Tran Dai Quang and Russian President Vladimir Putin during the former’s formal state visit to Russia.

-- Ho Chi Minh City is calling for partnership from the private sector in the renovation of three disused landfills in Cu Chi, Binh Tan and Hoc Mon districts into economic projects, Nguyen Toan Thang, director of the municipal Department of Natural Resources and Environment, has announced.

-- Vietnamese national Nguyen Ngoc Nhu Quynh, better known by her online alias ‘Me Nam’ (Mother Mushroom), was sentenced to ten years behind bars for “spreading propaganda against the Socialist Republic of Vietnam” by a court in the south-central province of Khanh Hoa on Thursday.

-- Vietnamese anti-corruption journalist Le Duy Phong, who was arrested last week while receiving cash from a local business in northern Yen Bai Province, has had his press card withdrawn by Vietnam’s Ministry of Information and Communications.

-- Pham Si Quy, director of northern Yen Bai Province’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment who is under government inspection for his ownership of assets including a villa complex built on a 1.3-hectare land plot previously zoned for forestry and aquaculture in the province, has said he had afforded the estates from his own savings as well as money loaned from the bank and acquaintances.

-- Ho Chi Minh City Police have arrested Tran Tuan Minh, director of the Nightfall restaurant in District 1 which was accused of cheating an Australian tourist of $30,000 in a payment card fraud, on charges of “employing electronics devices for the appropriation of properties”.

-- Vietnam’s trade deficit in the first six months of 2017 was US$2.7 billion, as export turnover rose 18.9 percent to $97.8 billion while import turnover climbed 24.1 percent to $100.5 billion in the period, according to latest socio-economic statistics by the General Statistics Office of Vietnam.

-- Ho Chi Minh City has promised to be a median for strengthened cooperation between local businesses and South Korean conglomerate Samsung, which is looking for Vietnamese suppliers of plastic and rubber for its electronics manufacturing.

Lifestyle

-- Vietnamese is the fourth most widely used language in Australia after English, Mandarin and Arabic, according to recent statistics on over 300 languages spoken in the Oceanic country announced by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
