Police have arrested Pham Thai Ha, assistant to Chairman of Vietnam's lawmaking National Assembly (NA) Vuong Dinh Hue, on charges of abusing powers or positions to influence others for personal gains, Lieutenant General To An Xo, spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Security, said on Monday.

Investigators also raided Ha’s residence and workplace.

Ha, also deputy head of the NA Office, was apprehended to serve an investigation into Thuan An Corporation, which operates in the fields of technical infrastructure investment and construction, and trading of electricity, renewable energy, and real estate.

Earlier, the Ministry of Public Security had arrested Thuan An Corporation chairman Nguyen Duy Hung for allegedly violating bidding regulations, causing serious consequences, and giving bribes.

Nguyen Khac Man, the firm’s deputy general director, faced the same fate for the same two violations, while Tran Anh Quang, general director of the corporation, was arrested for allegedly giving bribes.

Police also caught Hoang The Du, head of a division at the management board, on charges of violating bidding regulations, leading to serious consequences.

Investigators are expanding their probe into the case to specify all suspects’ violations, strictly handle them in line with the law, and take back state assets, Xo added.

Pham Thai Ha, a native of Thai Binh Province, holds a PhD in economics.

He used to hold the posts of secretary of the state auditor general, minister of finance and head of the Central Party Committee's Economic Commission, and assistant to a deputy prime minister as well as Hanoi's Party chief.

He was named deputy head of the NA Office and assistant to the NA chairman in May 2022.
