On Friday afternoon, the magnitude-7.7 earthquake struck Myanmar, followed by a powerful aftershock and several more moderate ones, sending tremors across Southeast Asia, including Vietnam and Thailand, India, and China.

Myanmar has confirmed 694 deaths in the Mandalay region alone, along with 1,670 people injured, AFP reported.

The powerful earthquake has also claimed the lives of at least nine people in Thailand.

Myanmar has declared a state of emergency in six major areas: Sagaing, Bago, Mandalay, Shan, Magway, and Naypyidaw.

The United States Geological Survey Earthquake Hazards Program said on Friday that fatalities could be between 10,000 and 100,000 people, and the economic impact could be as high as 70 percent of Myanmar’s GDP, Reuters reported.

The earthquake caused tremors as far as Thailand, leading to the collapse of several buildings in the capital, Bangkok. The government is mobilizing resources to rescue 81 people believed to be trapped under the rubble of a 30-story building under construction that collapsed following the earthquake in Bangkok.
