Society

-- Four people were killed, two others missing, and five hospitalized after being swept away by strong waves at a beach in the south-central Vietnamese province of Binh Thuan on Saturday afternoon.

-- Heavy rain is expected to continue dampening southern Vietnam and the Central Highlands due to the influence of a monsoon on Sunday, the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting reported, adding that rainfall will decrease on Sunday night and Monday.

-- Bao Loc Pass, a major route connecting Ho Chi Minh City and Da Lat in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong, resumed its normal operation on Saturday afternoon, nearly 36 hours after heavy rain triggered rockslides at more than ten locations along the pass.

-- Farmers in the southern province of Dong Nai have suffered losses worth nearly VND140 billion (US$6.1 million) after floods brought about by prolonged downpours killed and washed away about 3,720 metric tons of farm-raised fish.

-- Le Thi Dieu Linh, a 16-year-old Vietnamese tourist, has gone missing since August 6 while visiting the city of York in North Yorkshire, England, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Saturday.

-- A big fire engulfed a textile company in Hoc Mon District, Ho Chi Minh City at around 9:00 pm on Saturday, burning down many assets inside the facility.

Business

-- National carrier Vietnam Airlines on Saturday added 16 flights between Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Phu Quoc Island, and between Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Cam Ranh and Shanghai in order to transport passengers whose flights were previously affected by bad weather.

-- Vietnam’s export turnover of garment-textile and leather shoes between January and July grew 10.5 percent year-on-year to $18.34 billion, the Ministry of Industry and Trade said on Saturday.

Education

-- Vietnam won one gold, three silver, and three bronze medals, as well as an honorable mention at the 13th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA), which took place in Hungary from August 2 to 10.    

Lifestyle

-- More than 5,000 volunteers of the Vietnam Red Cross Society (VNRC) as well as local residents participated in a fundraising walk for Agent Orange (AO)/Dioxin victims and impoverished people with disabilities in Ho Chi Minh City on Saturday morning.
