A woman in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta has been sentenced to four years in prison after being caught on camera beating and pouring feces onto her elderly mother.
The People’s Court in Can Duoc District, Long An Province on Tuesday began a trial against 56-year-old Nguyen Thi Hoa, who was charged for abusing her biological mother.
According to the indictment, Hoa lived with her 79-year-old mother and 32-year-old daughter at a house in Can Duoc District.
The elderly woman previously decided to transfer the ownership of her house and farmland to Hoa’s older sister, Hoa’s daughter, and another relative.
As Hoa did not inherit any property from her mother, conflicts broke out between the two since then.
In November 2018, the elderly woman had a serious fall and was no longer able to walk following the accident.
Hoa had to take care of her mother, but usually beat and insulted the woman.
In late 2019, Hoa’s daughter secretly filmed her while she was torturing the victim.

In September 2020, Hoa’s mother passed away due to respiratory failure.
One of Hoa’s cousins was made aware of the torture while talking with the woman’s daughter at the funeral.
He asked the daughter to give him the video footage and later uploaded it on social media.
In the video, which was nearly seven minutes long, Hoa slapped her mother, hit her with a broom, and poured sand, garbage, and feces onto the woman’s body.
She also repeatedly yelled at and threatened the elderly woman.
After the clip went viral on Facebook, police acknowledged the incident and arrested Hoa to assist their investigation.
At the trial, Hoa was sentenced to four years in prison for her violent actions.
