Thanh Hoa FC, which compete in Vietnam’s top-tier V.League 1, failed to capitalize on their home-field advantage to overcome Cambodia’s Svay Rieng in the penultimate match of the 2024-25 ASEAN Club Championship group stage on Wednesday.

The Vietnamese side played out a lackluster 0-0 draw with Svay Rieng in the fourth round of Group A at Thanh Hoa Stadium on Wednesday.

Before the match, Thanh Hoa needed a win to strengthen their position in the top two of their group and secure a spot in the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, Svay Rieng still had hopes of advancing, contingent on strong results in their final two group-stage matches.

Thanh Hoa started Wednesday’s encounter with early control, but key players such as Luiz Antonio, Doan Ngoc Tan, Nguyen Thai Son, and A Mit struggled with fatigue after a grueling schedule which saw them play four matches in just 14 days.

In contrast, Svay Rieng relied on the strength of their four foreign players from Japan and Brazil, compared to Thanh Hoa’s two foreign players.

The game remained tight throughout, with both goalkeepers, Trinh Xuan Hoang for Thanh Hoa and Vireak Dara for Svay Rieng, making at least three crucial saves each.

The match ended in a goalless draw, preventing Thanh Hoa from securing a place in the quarterfinals.

With three matches completed in Group A of the 2024-25 ASEAN Club Championship, an international football competition between domestic champion club sides affiliated with member associations of the ASEAN Football Federation, Thailand’s BG Pathum United lead the group with eight points.

Malaysia’s Terengganu are in second place with seven points, ahead of PSM Makassar of Indonesia over goal difference.

Thanh Hoa rank fourth in the standings with six points, followed by Svay Rieng on four points and Myanmar’s Shan United, who have yet to earn a point.

Thanh Hoa are expected to face a tough challenge in their final match against PSM Makassar on February 5.
