Vietnam and Belarus have agreed to create new breakthroughs in their economic cooperation during Vietnamese State President Tran Dai Quang’s visit to Minsk from June 26 to 28.

President Quang joined talks with President Aleksandr Grigoryevich Lukashenko after a welcome ceremony in the Belarusian capital on Tuesday morning.

During their conversation, the Vietnamese head of state believed that the positive development in the Vietnam-Belarus ties will be the foundation to bring their relationship to the next level.

He hoped that the two nations’ economic cooperation would be as strong as their political relations.

Vietnam will always respect the enhancement of its traditional friendship and multi-faceted collaboration with Belarus, Quang asserted.

Both sides should focus on realizing the free trade agreements between Vietnam and the Eurasian Economic Union to seek breakthroughs in the two countries’ economic ties, striving for the bilateral trade turnover of US$500 million in the coming years, he said.

The two leaders agreed to continue carrying out cooperation plans in science and technology, education, and culture in 2016-18, boost the efficiency of the Intergovernmental Committee, support importation and exportation, and extend cooperation to industry and automobiles.

Speaking to his guest, President Lukashenko reiterated that Belarus would always consider Vietnam one of its important partners in Asia, adding that the country would continue supporting the Vietnamese people like in the past.

Regarding the situation in the East Vietnam Sea, both countries back the settlement of territorial disputes via peaceful means, without using or threatening to use force, in accordance with international law.

Both sides shared the view that President Quang’s visit would contribute significantly to the solidification of the two countries’ friendship and comprehensive cooperation, taking an important step toward the establishment of a strategic partnership.

Following their talks, the two leaders witnessed the signing of nine cooperation documents between their two countries.

The Vietnamese president also met with Belarusian Prime Minister Andrei Kobyakov on the same day.

He is scheduled to leave Belarus for his visit to Russia, which runs from June 29 to July 1.
