Trade centers, stores, and particularly fashion boutiques, in both Ho Chi Minh City Hanoi were packed with customers, whereas online shopping websites were flooded with orders on this year’s Black Friday shopping spree.
Brick-and-mortar shops in Vietnam started observing Black Friday arguably in 2013, before the U.S.-styled shopping fever hit the Vietnamese Internet for the first time in 2014.
Just like any other previous years the sales event ‘debuted’ in Vietnam, Black Friday 2018 attracted hundreds of people ready for the shopping spree right from the early morning, an indicator that the shopping day is becoming as popular in Vietnam as it is in its motherland – the U.S.
With hourly and one-day discounts, shopping centers across major cities in Vietnam had to ‘surrender’ as they failed to serve long queues of patiently-waiting shoppers.
Several brands at major shopping malls in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 1 offered discounts from 30 percent to as much as 90 percent – a Black Friday price cut in Vietnam, resulting in large crowds of shoppers and causing congestion in the city’s central business district.

Similarly, people in Hanoi flocked to shopping centers and stores, especially after working hours in the afternoon, on streets across the capital city to hunt for clothes and shoes at heavily discounted prices. Most of these stores offered discounts from 30 to 80 percent.
The products most sought after by shoppers were fashion items from high-end brands.
From the early morning, these shopping malls were so flooded with customers that some of them had to close their doors, waiting for already in customers to finish shopping before welcoming the next seas of guests into the premises.
This situation remained tense until night fell, the stores even had to arrange security forces to ensure safety for customers.
