Two Vietnamese sixth graders have won two bronze medals from a global event for the mathematically gifted.

Tran Nguyen Thanh Nguyen and Tran Phuong Anh from Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted in Ho Chi Minh City claimed the prizes given at the 2016 World Mathematical Olympiad (WMO) on Saturday.

This is the first time Vietnam has had candidates, including 12 students from grade fifth to grade sixth, advancing to the final round.

The WMO, firstly held in 2010, is an international mathematical competition for elementary and middle school students and is hosted annually in a different country, according to its website.

The contest aims to provide a platform for mathematically gifted youths from around the world to showcase their mathematical and critical thinking skills as well as engaging in cultural exchange, the website said.

The event this year took place in Seoul, South Korea, with contestants from the UK, Canada, Australia, China, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, and other countries.
