The Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam has agreed to relieve President Vo Van Thuong of his duties as a member of the Politburo and a member of the 13th Central Party Committee.
The Party Central Committee's Office announced on Wednesday that the 13th Central Committee met at its headquarters to discuss and give opinions on relieving Thuong of his duties as a member of the Politburo, a member of the 13th Central Committee, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and Chairman of the National Defense and Security Council for the 2021-26 tenure.
Thuong is a key leader of the Party and the state who has received fundamental training and has risen through the ranks from grassroots levels.
He has been entrusted with significant leadership roles within both the Party and the state.
However, reports from the Central Inspection Commission and relevant authorities indicate that he has breached regulations prohibiting certain actions for Party members.
He has also failed to fulfill the responsibility of setting an example for officials and Party members, particularly crucial for members of the Politburo, the Secretariat, and the Party Central Committee.
Moreover, he has been held accountable as a leader in accordance with Party rules and state laws.
Thuong's violations and shortcomings have stirred negative public sentiment and have had an adverse impact on the reputation of the Party, the state, and his personal integrity.
Having a clear understanding of his responsibilities to the Party, the state, and the people, he submitted a request to relinquish all of his assigned positions and duties.
In accordance with current Party and state regulations and taking into account Thuong's preferences, the Party Central Committee has decided to relieve him of the following roles: member of the Politburo, member of the 13th Party Central Committee, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and Chairman of the National Defense and Security Council for the 2021-26 term.
The Party Central Committee tasks the Politburo with directing relevant agencies to implement the necessary procedures in compliance with regulations.
Thuong was sworn in as state president in March 2023.
Born in 1970 in the Mekong Delta province of Vinh Long, Thuong holds a master's degree in philosophy.
