Politics:

-- Vietnamese State President Truong Tan Sang met with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, yesterday while attending the 22nd Summit of the Asia – Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Beijing, and both sides committed to respecting mutual legitimate benefits.

Society:

-- The Vietnamese National Assembly yesterday allowed Ho Chi Minh City to force drug addicts to join detoxification programs as in-patients, and the city said it is now ready to receive addicts.

-- Nearly 40 percent of trucks traveling in Vietnam carry overloaded cargo, according to Nguyen Xuan Cuong, vice head of the Directorate for Roads of Vietnam.

-- On November 8, thieves broke into the office of the Party Committee of the central city of Hue and stole VND10 million (US$481).

-- The central city of Quang Ngai has suggested that the Ministry of Finance increase the import tax on fuel. The current rate is 18 percent for petrol and 14 percent for diesel.

Business:

-- Vietnam should be more active in the supply of textile materials to meet the increasing demands of U.S. firms that are moving away from China to Vietnam, according to a meeting held in Ho Chi Minh City yesterday.

-- U.S. chipmaker Intel announced yesterday it will install a second production line to manufacture computer CPUs in Vietnam, and the facility will come into operation this month.

-- Honda Vietnam has put into operation its third motorbike production factory in Vietnam. The $120 million facility is located in the northern province of Ha Nam.

-- Former football star David Beckham arrived in Hanoi yesterday for a two-day business trip to endorse a beverage product.

Sports:

-- Vietnamese weightlifter Thach Kim Tuan has been awarded VND1.5 billion ($72,100) for winning a gold medal and two silvers at the 2014 World Weightlifting Championship held in Kazakhstan.

-- Vietnamese American footballer Lee Nguyen has been called up to the U.S. national soccer team to prepare for two friendlies with Colombia and Ireland on November 15 and 19.

Lifestyle:

-- Ho Chi Minh City will host the 2014 International Guitar Festival from November 12 to 16 at the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory.
